Is This The End of Bill Belichick?
It’s Week 5 and we’re getting into the meat of the season. Injuries are piling up. Teams are falling apart (ahem New England), and only 2 teams who are currently undefeated. I’m excited every Sunday to see what chaos the day is going to bring. It’s like being a kid on Christmas every week. This week was no exception. Let’s get into it.
CHI v. WAS
Hello, hi. I would like to eat my words. I honestly thought that the Commanders were going to win here. Maybe not destroy the Bear, but definitely win. And then all of the sudden Chicago seemed to put their heads in the game and actually play football. DJ Moore was a freaking beast. Justin Fields remembered how to throw the ball while standing in the pocket. It was a thing of beauty. Well . . . not beauty but it was certainly Chicago’s game. To be determined whether this will continue or if it was a fluke.
Final Score: CHI 40 WAS 20
BUF v. JAX
LONDON BABY! I wish the Bills had been that excited going into the game. Instead what we got was a lackluster performance from a team that didn’t appear to get enough sleep the night before. I needed Buffalo to win this game so badly. The AFC South is tight and I need these non-conference teams to shake Jacksonville’s confidence. Instead I was woefully disappointed. But I wasn’t disappointed from a fantasy football perspective. Gabe Davis is magic and when a play got called back for a penalty that would’ve resulted in a Gabe Davis touchdown, they just did it again and I got a Gabe Davis touchdown. My fantasy football team thanks you.
Final Score: BUF 20 JAX 25
HOU v. ATL
I wouldn’t have picked this for a thriller at the end but it certainly was. Houston has figured out the passing game, but not much else. Atlanta is still kind of shaky, but their game management was on point. The game came down to a last second field goal and Atlanta did their part to help to Colts get to the top of the AFC South.
Final Score: HOU 19 ATL 21
CAR v. DET
Detroit is a FUN team. It is so exciting to watch them on the field. Goff looks settled and like he has control over the field. There was definitely a risk that with St. Brown out the Lions could’ve been very one dimensional. But the rest of the Lions WRs stepped up with Reynolds taking the lion’s share (lol . . . puns) of the targets. The run game was beautiful and Montgomery proved that Week 4 was not just a fluke. I can’t wait to watch this team this season. It’s going to be a fund ride.
Final Score: CAR 24 DET 42
TEN v. IND
Okay, admittedly this game was obviously going to be the game I cared about the most this week. It’s my favorite game every year and for the last four years I’ve just been disappointed. This time? I was disappointed for a different reason. The refereeing was inconsistent and 10 minutes after I told Joel that Richardson needed to stop running he sprained the AC joint in his shoulder and is out for 4-8 weeks. THANK GOODNESS Minshew is a strong QB who could start for many other teams in the league. In other news, Derrick Henry tried to throw another TD pass. As much as I love it, it’s less surprising when you do it every week. I thought the AFC East was going to beat up on each other this year, but it may be the AFC South instead.
Final Score: TEN 16 IND 23
NYG v. MIA
The Giants should just pack it in. Miami, however, needs to learn some self control. Half the game their defense looked more like a bunch of drunk angry teenagers more than a defense that was executing moves in a well thought out manner. That unhinged recklessness isn’t going to do what they need it to do when they play better teams. Sure, it helps them beat a team like the Giants, but it certainly didn’t work when they played the Bills last week. If Miami wants to win the division, they need to find a screwdriver and tighten themselves up.
Final Score: NYG 16 MI 31
NO v. NE
In the last 2 weeks New England has scored a total of 3 points. They’ve been outscored 72-3. No, that’s not a joke. What made Bill Belichick successful the last few years? Not Bill. It was Tom Brady and the team that was built around him. Honestly, the only question in my mind is whether Belichick retires after this season or is fired. New England is 1-4 and they’re giving it their best shot to have the first pick of the draft.
Final Score: NO 34 NE 0
BAL v. PIT
This was Baltimore’s game to lose. And then out of no where Kenny Pickett called an audible (😂), threw the ball to Pickens and Pittsburgh came back to win the game. I guess we should never could out Mike Tomlin’s team.
Final Score: BAL 10 PIT 17
PHI v. LAR
The Eagles shut down the Rams run game and even though Cooper Kupp was back, their passing game wasn’t effective enough to outscore the Eagles. My concern? Hurts was the team’s leading rusher. You can’t have your QB be your leading rusher if you want to win every week. I think it’s only a matter of time until the Eagles tumble and fall.
Final Score: PHI 23 LAR 14
CIN v. ARI
I feel sorry for anyone who had to play against Jamaar Chase in fantasy football. This game didn’t even seem like Cincinnati had to try that hard to win. The Cardinals lost James Connor which is going to affect their next few weeks, but Zach Ertz looked pretty good. Cincinnati seems back to the selves that got them to the playoffs the last couple years. And it seems like Burrow’s leg is all healed.
Final Score: CIN 34 ARI 20
NYJ v. DEN
Good god. A muffed punt with a fumble recovery. A scoop and score. And Breece Hall getting just a handful of yards away from a 200-yard game. This was the fun Jets tonight, not the sad Jets. I like the fun Jets. They’re the Jets defense I adored during Hard Knocks. I want more of these Jets please and thank you.
Final Score: NYJ 31 DEN 21
KC v. MIN
MINNESOTA FUMBLED ON THE FIRST PLAY. Are you freaking kidding me?!?!? It’s the 8th fumble so far for the team that can’t seem to stop turning the ball over. Every week Kirk Cousins throws for 250+ and the Vikings can’t put together a defense that would stop anyone, let alone the Kansas City Chiefs. I almost can’t watch the Vikings anymore because it’s just so dang sad.
Final Score: KC 27 MIN 20
DAL v. SF
I really really really like watching San Francisco play. I’ve said it several times this season but I think they’re the most consistent most complete team in the league. Last week McCaffrey scored 4 TDs. This week Kittle scored 3. It’s just such a well rounded offense that is supported by a strong defense. It’s an actual thing of beauty. Dallas’s offense hasn’t really taken off this year and their reliance on their defense is hurt by the injuries they keep seeing. If I were a team that has to face SF in the coming weeks, I’d be shaking in my cleats.
Final Score: SF 42 DAL 10
GB v. LV
I’m honestly surprised the Packers were even able to put 13 points up on the board. Jordan Love looked like he forgot what color jersey he was supposed to be throwing to. And with Aaron Jones still out GB had no run game to supplement the pathetic passing game. The Raiders were decently mediocre. Just generally this wasn’t an exciting game. I need a Monday night game that really gets my blood pumping next week please.
Final Score: GB 13 LV 17
What are we going to see next week? I can’t wait to find out.
